When Frodo peered into the ‘Mirror of Galadriel’ in the Fellowship of the Ring, he was offered a glimpse of “things that were, things that are, and things that have not yet come to pass”. This week I’m offering a glimpse into the present, past and future of Little Prince in terms of the plants we’re growing. First of all, let’s go into the PAST, which is where you’ll have to go to find Mahonia nervosa. It was one of the first plants we grew at Little Prince 23 years ago, and the discussion this morning in the office was “we should have stopped growing it 22 years ago”. It’s just a very difficult to grow with high losses. Another plant in Little Prince’s past is Veronica prostate ‘Goldwell’.
The NOW is looking great at Little Prince! Let me give you a synopsis and highlight a few MUST HAVES for you this week. The overview has to begin with houseplants in our PRINCE OF PARADISE™ brand. The tropical ferns all look really nice, including several species of Pteris. Our tender succulent PLANTER POPPERS™ and CACTUS POPPERS™ look great now, and are in good supply. Albuca spiralis ‘Frizzle Sizzle’ looks AMAZING! In our FOOT TRAFFIC PERENNIALS™ brand, the Erodium and Leptinella are super-full and lush.
Iberis ‘Purity’ and ‘Pink Ice’ Candytuft are in the CLIFF HANGERS™ group and look beautiful NOW. In fact, if you want ‘Pink Ice’, you should order soon. ‘Purity is blooming nicely on compact plants. Mike grows these varieties on the cool side, so they are compact and will have no issues moving outside now. Of course, NOW is a perfect time to bring in plants like Sempervivums, which are very cold-hardy and take virtually now labor to maintain this time of year. Labor at the cash register, but not holding a hose. Cool, right? Our Bletilla varieties look great now, and are on our list this week. Check out all the other pictures and items in our current availability. It would take the whole month to write about every plant variety we grow at Little Prince. We trust you know that no matter what plants you’re ordering, you’ll be getting the very best the industry has to offer, and each plant will have our alluring and informative tags that are certain to seduce your customers!
The FUTURE is so very bright at Little Prince! Here is a short teaser trailer list of “things that have not yet come to pass”. Chick Charms® ’Gold Nugget’ LINERS will once again be available. We would love to have pre-orders for this crop, and that likely will be ONLY way you have snowball’s chance in Key West to get them. We hope to have some available by late spring.
Our houseplant program will continue to expand throughout 2020. Monstera ‘Swiss Cheese’ and Rhaphidophora will be back on the menu by summer, and Jewel Orchids will be available soon. Eyelash Ferns will be ready very soon. We’ll be adding more VERY COOL begonias, new varieties of tropical ferns, new cacti and succulents and more. You could help us out by letting me know things you’d like to be able to get from us. We try to stay on the cutting edge of the houseplant demand in the US, and I have good friends in high places when it comes to sourcing new varieties.
Other plants you should be aware of are Sinningia ‘Invasion Force’, Dicliptera suberecta, and Lobelia laxiflora, all fabulous hummingbird attractors. We also have hundreds of Podophyllum ‘Spotty Dotty’ gallons available this spring. Also, back by VERY POPULAR DEMAND is Coniogramme eminensis ‘Golden Zebra’. We will have a limited supply again, so order this plant ASAP. I would anticipate them to be retail ready in May.
We look forward to your order this week!
